ABSTRACT LANDSCAPE MIXED MEDIA - Stephanie Coley

Here are the three lovely challenges I've lined up for Jan/Feb. Images attached, plus images of my own artwork interpretations from the same challenges. I'll bring these along on the day, so people can have a proper look at them. I'll also run through my process for putting these together. I'll explain what materials I used and how I used them.

Mixed media is really fun and exciting, but it's a nightmare knowing what materials to bring on the day! As I use whatever I can lay my hands on. All three of my mixed-media artworks attached to this email started out with some collage. Nothing too fancy. I simply wanted to mess my paper up a bit, and to get rid of that scary white background. And speaking of paper, my three pieces are all A3 in size. Some I've used watercolour paper, some just decent cartridge paper. After the collage bit, I then start to build up layers, usually starting with thin acrylic, watery watercolours or occasionally inks. Things tend to get wet and messy at this stage. I'll hopefully remember to bring my hair-dryer. Depending on how things are looking, I'll either throw more layers of paint on, or I'll start to draw with things like pastels or charcoal. The whole process is very loose and playful. I scrape paint with old credit-cards, I let watery paints run where they want. I use water-spray bottles to wet inks. I shift things around with my fingers. I rip rather than cut. But at some point I do fiddle a tiny bit and reach for a paint-brush or coloured pencil.

So, materials are basically as much as people can carry. Essentials I'd say are...

Paper to work on.

A range of coloured collage papers (non shiny/glossy tend to work best)

Glue (Mod-Podge, PVA, Glue-sticks etc)

Paints (acrylics, watercolours, inks etc)

Brushes

Any other art materials people have got, by all means bring them.
