Light and shadow. Drawing with charcoal and other black and white media
For my two classes in February / March, we will be working with a range of black and white media to create interesting, dramatic and atmospheric drawings like those shown below. I will bring these and others along with me.
We will be working quickly and expressively in charcoal using lots of water to create texture and depth of tone. Things may well get a bit messy!
My process begins with paper which I give a coat of gesso so it can take a bit of punishment. I will bring ready prepared paper for you on the day. I will explain how I approach the work and we will work together to develop your ideas.
Essential materials are:
-
Vine charcoal
-
Compressed charcoal (I will bring plenty of this)
-
Charcoal pencil(s)
-
Eraser (putty rubber ideally)
-
Small spray bottle (just a clean brush and some water would also be fine)
-
Good quality white pastel if possible
-
Black & white paint – watercolour, gouache or acrylic ideally.
-
Anything else that makes a black or white mark, inks, pens etc..
I will bring:
-
Ready prepared paper (I give it a coating of gesso).
-
Reference material.
-
Compressed charcoal.
